School districts must adopt a policy by September 1, 2016 permitting students with diabetes to self-administer diabetes medication and blood glucose monitoring supplies.

Students permitted to self-administer medication or blood glucose monitoring may possess and use prescribed inhalers, epinephrine auto-injectors, insulin, or blood glucose monitoring supplies at all times.

"Medication" includes epinephrine auto-injectors, metered-dose inhalers, dry powder inhalers, or insulin prescribed by a physician with an individual label.

"Self-administration" means a student's use of medication or blood glucose monitoring supplies pursuant to a physician's prescription or written direction.

School districts may require students to maintain duplicate prescription medications or blood glucose monitoring supplies with the school nurse or administrator, but this does not prevent student possession of the original prescribed items.
