Idaho suicide rates are 57% higher than the national average, with suicide being the second leading cause of death for ages 15-34 and for males ages 10-14.

Between 2012 and 2016, 105 Idaho school children age 18 and under died by suicide, including 27 children age 14 or younger.

One in seven high school students and one in four 9th-grade females have reported seriously considering suicide in the previous 12 months, with 13% of high school students reporting having made a suicide plan.

The Legislative Council is authorized to appoint a committee to study teen suicide in Idaho and make recommendations for prevention.

The committee shall report its findings, recommendations, and proposed legislation to the First Regular Session of the Sixty-fifth Idaho Legislature, with nonlegislative members allowed but receiving no compensation or voting privileges.
