Educational interpreters in Idaho public schools must achieve a score of 3.5 or higher on the educational interpreter performance assessment or hold current certification from recognized organizations including the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf or National Association of the Deaf at level III or higher.

Newly hired educational interpreters who have not previously worked in Idaho public schools may apply for emergency authorization to work for two (2) years before meeting qualification requirements, with a one-time one (1) year extension available for good cause shown.

Graduates of interpreter education programs may serve as educational interpreters for one (1) year following graduation before meeting full qualification requirements.

All educational interpreters employed by Idaho public schools must complete a minimum of 80 hours of training in interpreting or transliterating every five (5) years, which may include home study, seminars, workshops, and mentoring programs.

The State Board of Education is authorized to promulgate rules, if applicable, necessary to implement these provisions.
