Vessel owners must file applications for certificates of number within fifteen (15) days of purchase with assessors or authorized vendors, and receive two validation stickers and a certificate showing their permanently assigned vessel number.

Vessels numbered in Idaho pay a $10.00 annual waterway access fee, while vessels documented by the U.S. Coast Guard or numbered outside Idaho pay $30.00, with nonmotorized vessels paying $7.00; licensed outfitters with nonmotorized fleets receive prorated group rates.

The validation sticker for Idaho-numbered vessels also serves as a protection against invasive species sticker, while out-of-state vessels must display a separate invasive species sticker affixed next to their validation sticker.

Vendors retain $1.50 of collected fees, the department retains up to 20% for administrative costs, and remaining fees are deposited into the invasive species fund established in section 22-1911, Idaho Code.

Vessel operators must ensure compliance with all provisions of the boating chapter, with noncompliance resulting in possible assessment of penalties as described in section 67-7033, Idaho Code; the act becomes effective July 1, 2023.
