County clerks facing election personnel shortages may request the jury commission and court to offer prospective jurors seeking excuse or postponement from jury service the option to volunteer as poll workers instead.

Prospective jurors who complete volunteer poll worker service to the county clerk's satisfaction receive a 2-year exemption from jury service.

Prospective jurors who accept the poll worker option but fail to complete the service are reinstated to the county jury list.

Volunteer poll workers serving under this provision are exempt from the minimum wage compensation requirements that apply to other election personnel.

Declared an emergency measure, effective July 1, 2026.
