Presidential primaries will be held on the first Tuesday in March of each presidential election year, separate from the regular May primary elections

Presidential candidates must file a declaration of candidacy with the Secretary of State and pay a $50,000 filing fee at least 90 days before the primary

Political party participation in the presidential primary is optional; parties must notify the Secretary of State by the last Tuesday in November prior to the primary if they intend to participate

The state of Idaho will cover all costs related to the presidential primary, including ballot preparation and publication of legal notices, with county clerks filing certified claims for reimbursement

The act is declared an emergency measure and takes effect July 1, 2026
