Retired PERSI members who are appointed (not just elected) to an elective public office they did not hold prior to retirement may now continue receiving retirement benefits without accruing additional service, with no contributions required from member or employer during reemployment

Police officers and firefighters who retire at age 50 or older and return to work with a PERSI employer within 30 days may elect to continue receiving benefits while both member and employer make contributions at applicable rates; this provision expires June 30, 2027

Early retired members who return to work with a PERSI employer within 90 days or have guaranteed reemployment will have their retirement negated and must repay any benefits received

Employers must immediately report hiring any retired member to the retirement board; failure to report makes the employer liable for repaying improperly paid benefits plus interest and delinquent contributions

Effective date: July 1, 2026, with emergency declaration
