Counties with populations over 500,000 must acquire and maintain a gunshot location system by April 1, 2011 to assist law enforcement agencies.

Municipalities with populations over 100,000 must acquire and maintain a gunshot location system by April 1, 2011 to assist law enforcement agencies.

Gunshot location systems must cover at least one square mile in areas with significant gunshot activity and must meet United States Department of Homeland Security guidelines.

A gunshot location system is defined as a network of acoustic sensors and processing nodes capable of detecting gunshots and other sounds using acoustic triangulation, operable via wired, wireless, or hybrid configuration.

Counties and municipalities must create databases to log gunshot incidents within areas covered by the system; home rule units cannot adopt less restrictive gunshot location system requirements than those established in this Act.
