IL HB6905

Requires the Chicago Board of Education to establish basic skills classes for students in grades 4, 5, and 6.

Mandates placement of 3rd grade students who are at least 2 grade levels behind in reading or mathematics into basic skills classes starting in 4th grade.

Students remain in basic skills classes until completing 6th grade or achieving reading or mathematics skills at or above the 6th grade level, whichever comes first.

Basic skills classes must provide separate classroom environments with additional instruction and support, with the goal of bringing students to grade level by the end of 6th grade.

Requires the State Board of Education to create curriculum, establish learning objectives, and provide lesson plans for the basic skills classes; classes must not be classified as special education.
