HB6922 Summary

• Amends the Unified Code of Corrections to define "meritorious service" for purposes of the Director of Corrections awarding additional good conduct credit to prisoners.

• Defines meritorious service to include: saving lives or preventing bodily harm; performing heroic service during emergencies; volunteering for hazardous assignments; assisting with maintaining order during disturbances; demonstrating rehabilitation through educational/rehabilitative programs; providing valuable assistance to other prisoners; or performing other exceptional service approved by the Governor.

• Limits meritorious service good conduct credit to a maximum of 180 days, with a cap of 90 days for prisoners serving sentences for first degree murder, sexual offenses, kidnapping, aggravated assault, or certain driving under the influence convictions.

• Requires the Director to make a written determination that the prisoner is eligible and has served a minimum of 60 days before awarding meritorious service credit; requires written explanation of the service or conduct upon which the award is based.

• Takes effect immediately upon becoming law.
