Recognize and support efforts by citizens in Clinton, Jefferson, Marion, and Washington Counties to reroute train traffic around Centralia and Mt. Vernon to reduce traffic delays at grade crossings.

Acknowledge that over 30,000 residents in Centralia and Mt. Vernon experience significant traffic delays from railroad trains, with approximately 40 freight trains daily blocking crossings on 2 state highways in Centralia and 6 in Mt. Vernon.

Note that a sharp, curving section of track south of Centralia with a 10 mph speed limit causes extreme delays, with some trains nearly one mile long requiring motorists to wait many minutes to cross.

Encourage the Illinois Department of Transportation, Illinois Commerce Commission, and affected railroads to work with community members to develop a timely solution, with two potential alternative routes identified that require new track investment.

Direct copies of the resolution be sent to state and federal officials including the Illinois Department of Transportation, Illinois Commerce Commission, U.S. Congressman John Shimkus, U.S. Senator Dick Durbin, and the mayors of Centralia and Mt. Vernon.
