John Schmidt of Antioch passed away on May 30, 2010, and the Illinois House of Representatives expresses condolences to his family and friends.

Born June 29, 1922, in Munich, Germany, Schmidt immigrated to the U.S. in 1923, settled in Waukegan, and later moved to Antioch in 1995.

Served as a combat engineer with the U.S. Army's 3rd Armored Division during World War II, fighting in major European theatre campaigns.

Worked at Northwestern University's Technological Institute for 42 years after 1946, running the Civil Engineering Lab and mentoring engineering students in model making, stress analysis, and high-speed photography.

Survived by three children (Robert, Carol, and Paula), two grandchildren (Mark Schmidt and Dawn Holcomb), and one great-grandson (Carson Holcomb); was preceded in death by his wife of 63 years, Irene.
