SB0137 - Electricians Licensing Act

• Creates the Electricians Licensing Act to regulate electricians and electrical contractors through the Illinois Department of Labor, effective January 1, 2010.

• Establishes the Illinois State Board of Electrical Examiners with 11 members to oversee licensing, examinations, and discipline of master electricians, journeyman electricians, residential electricians, and electrical contractors.

• Requires applicants to meet specified experience requirements (ranging from 4-6 years depending on license type) and pass written examinations testing knowledge of the National Electrical Code and electrical installation standards.

• Provides exemptions for utility company employees, farm owners, manufacturing facility maintenance workers, and owners performing electrical work on their own single-family residences.

• Authorizes home rule municipalities with populations of 500,000 or more to establish their own local licensing boards with substantially equivalent standards; sets automatic repeal date of January 1, 2019.
