IL SB1358

Amends the Higher Education Student Assistance Act to expand survivor grant eligibility to include peace officers (as defined under the Criminal Code of 1961) in addition to police officers and fire officers.

Removes the requirement that the officer be 90% to 100% disabled, changing the eligibility standard to permanent disability without a specific percentage threshold.

Provides eligible survivors (spouses, natural children, legally adopted children, or children in legal custody) with 8 semesters or 12 quarters of full tuition and mandatory fee coverage at Illinois public institutions or equivalent payment at private institutions.

Allows beneficiaries to use grants for undergraduate or graduate study without demonstrating financial need and permits non-Illinois residents to qualify.

Takes effect immediately upon becoming law.
