SB2493 Summary

• Prohibits group health plans and health insurance issuers from imposing any preexisting condition exclusions on individuals seeking group or individual health insurance coverage.

• Removes language allowing preexisting condition exclusions based on medical advice, diagnosis, care, or treatment received within 6 months before enrollment, and eliminates provisions for exclusion periods of 12-18 months.

• Eliminates special exceptions that previously allowed exclusions for certain newborns and adopted children if they gained creditable coverage within 30 days.

• Repeals provisions governing affiliation periods for health maintenance organizations and requirements for alternative methods to address adverse selection.

• Takes effect immediately upon becoming law.
