President Barack Obama nominated Judge Sonia Sotomayor of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit to serve as a Justice of the United States Supreme Court on May 26, 2009.

Judge Sotomayor graduated summa cum laude from Princeton University and Yale Law School, where she served as editor of the Yale Law Journal, and has held positions as an Assistant District Attorney (1978), law firm partner (1984), U.S. District Court judge (1992), and U.S. Court of Appeals judge (1998).

If confirmed, Judge Sotomayor would be the first Hispanic and only the third woman in history to serve as a Supreme Court Justice.

The Illinois Senate congratulates Judge Sotomayor for the honor and President Obama for his nomination, and calls upon the United States Senate to confirm her after full and fair consideration of her career.

Suitable copies of the resolution shall be presented to Judge Sonia Sotomayor and all members of the United States Senate.
