Richard Smith "Dick" Applegate of Peoria died on July 16, 2010, and the Illinois Senate expresses condolences to his family and friends.

Born May 8, 1944, in Pekin to H. Smith and Mary Shane Applegate; married Paula Maddox on October 22, 1983.

Graduated from Richwoods High School in 1962 and Bradley University in 1966 with a Bachelor of Music Education; served as a music educator and choral director in central Illinois schools until retiring from Peoria School District 150 in 2005.

Served as choir director for the Universalist Unitarian Church in Peoria for 26 years, performed as a five-string banjo player, taught private music students, and was a founding member of Applegate and Company and a member of Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia.

Survived by his wife Paula, two sisters Carol Terry and Nancy Bearce, brother Robert Applegate, and various nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews.
