Merrill C. Meigs Field Airport operated as a single-strip airport on Northerly Island in Chicago from December 10, 1948, and became the country's busiest single-strip airport by 1955, generating 40,000 flights annually and earning over $450,000,000 per year

Chicago Mayor Richard J. Daley ordered private crews to destroy the Meigs Field runway on March 31, 2003, by bulldozing large X-shaped gouges into the runway surface and rendering the airstrip unusable

The Senate urges the City of Chicago to repair and reopen Meigs Field Airport as soon as possible to spur economic growth, generate over 50,000 flights annually, and bring in over $600,000,000 annually

Reopening Meigs Field would relieve congestion at Midway Airport and O'Hare International Airport, create jobs, and support Chicago's convention centers including McCormick Place

Copies of this resolution shall be presented to Chicago Mayor Richard J. Daley and each member of the Chicago City Council
