Michael P. Verticchio of Gillespie passed away on September 2, 2010, at age 93.

Served in the United States Navy during World War II, teaching physics at the Naval Academy Preparatory School.

Earned degrees from Illinois College and University of Illinois, then taught chemistry, physics, and mathematics in Illinois schools and served as principal of Gillespie High School.

Held positions as Assistant County Superintendent and Macoupin County Superintendent of Schools, and worked as a real estate broker and income tax practitioner.

Written 4 novels in his later years and survived by his son Michael J. Verticchio, daughter Mary Jo Handley, 5 grandchildren, and 4 great-grandchildren.
