Marshall "Zeke" Smith of Edwardsville passed away on November 18, 2010, and the Illinois Senate expresses mourning for his death.

Enlisted in the U.S. Army the day after Pearl Harbor was attacked and served 34 months in the infantry in North Africa and the Middle East, discharged as a staff sergeant in November 1945.

Graduated from Washington University Law School in 1949 and opened a law practice in Wood River with a general and trial practice handling workers' compensation cases for approximately 50 years.

Served as Assistant State's Attorney for 8 years and represented the Village of East Alton, City of Wood River, St. Louis Regional Airport, and Wood River Levy District for approximately 20 years.

Survived by his wife of 64 years Virginia, three sons (Mark, Eric, and Wyatt), five grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren.
