IL HB0097

Amends the Election Code to establish a recall mechanism for local elected officials in offices with terms longer than 2 years, effective immediately.

Requires a petition signed by at least 20% of registered voters entitled to vote for the official, filed at least 61 days before the next regularly scheduled election, containing a statement of reasons for recall in not more than 200 words.

Prohibits recall of officials with less than 18 months remaining in their term and limits recall elections to once per term of office.

Provides that if a majority of voters approve removal at the election, a vacancy is created and filled according to procedures for filling vacancies in that office.

Bars removed officials or those who resigned while recall proceedings were pending from appointment or election to the same office within one year after removal or resignation.
