HB0271 Summary

• Amends the Illinois Municipal Code to establish procedures for placing candidates on the general municipal election ballot based on primary election results.

• For single officer elections, the top 2 primary vote-getters advance to the general ballot; for 2 at-large aldermen, the top 4 advance; for 3 at-large aldermen, the top 6 advance.

• Write-in candidates in the primary must receive votes equal to the petition signature requirement for their office or exceed the vote total of at least one candidate whose name was printed on the primary ballot to appear on the general ballot.

• A primary election must be held if a fifth candidate files a written statement of intent to run as a write-in candidate on or before the 61st day before the consolidated primary election.

• Takes effect immediately upon becoming law.
