IL HB1243

Establishes a mandatory community service requirement in J. Sterling Morton High School District 201 where students entering 9th grade in 2011-2012 or 2012-2013 must complete at least 40 hours of community service to receive a high school diploma.

Exempts children with disabilities as defined under Article 14 of the School Code and pupils involved in extracurricular activities from the community service requirement, with the number of qualifying activities to be determined by the school board.

Requires community service to have no staff monitoring and authorizes the school board to establish rules and procedures for implementation.

Amends existing Section 27-22.3 to clarify that community service performed under the new mandatory requirement in Section 27-22.4 does not qualify for credit under the optional volunteer service credit program.

Takes effect immediately upon enactment.
