IL HB1248

Requires students in grades 9-12 to complete at least 15 hours of community service each school year as a prerequisite for grade promotion and high school diploma.

Allows up to 5 of the 15 required community service hours to be performed by a parent or guardian if they participate with and at the same time as the student.

Amends the existing volunteer service credit program to clarify that community service performed under this new requirement does not qualify for additional volunteer service credit.

Directs school boards to establish rules and procedures necessary to implement the community service requirement.

Takes effect immediately upon becoming law.
