HB4008 Summary

• Employees of the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District (MWRD) who first enter service on or after January 1, 2013 become eligible for ordinary disability benefits on the 31st day of disability, without needing to exhaust sick leave first.

• Disability benefit eligibility is changed from requiring exhaustion of sick leave to simply requiring 31 days of continuous disability for new employees hired after January 1, 2013.

• For employees hired after the effective date who die before their employee contributions are paid out as retirement, spouse's, or child's annuities, a refund of excess contributions shall be paid without interest.

• Refunds to surviving children are delayed until the youngest eligible child reaches age 23 if surviving children are eligible for child's annuities.

• Disability benefit payments are changed from intervals of not more than 30 days to monthly payments, effective January 1, 2013.
