Fire sprinkler systems are required in dormitories of all post-secondary educational institutions by 2013.

Post-secondary institutions may file a compliance plan with the Office of the State Fire Marshal by November 1, 2012 to extend the deadline to September 1, 2014.

Compliance plans must include fire sprinkler system working drawings, hydraulic calculations, water supply analysis, and a detailed installation schedule with projected completion dates.

Violations of the fire sprinkler requirement are business offenses punishable by a fine of not more than $1,000 per day.

The requirement applies to both existing and newly constructed dormitories and does not eliminate other fire safety requirements such as fire extinguishers.
