IL HB4983

Amends the Department of Natural Resources Conservation Police Officers section to establish minimum professional standards for sworn law enforcement positions hired after July 1, 2001.

Requires new hires to hold either a 2-year degree with 3 consecutive years of police experience with the same agency, or a 4-year degree.

Requires candidates to demonstrate intermediate-level swimming competency using American Red Cross techniques and complete a 400-hour Conservation Police Academy training program within one year of hire.

Exempts honorably discharged veterans and active military members awarded specific service medals (Southwest Asia Service, Kosovo Campaign, Korean Defense Service, Afghanistan Campaign, Iraq Campaign, or Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal) from collegiate educational requirements.

Takes effect upon becoming law.
