New nursing home surveyors must complete 24 hours of classroom training using an administration-approved curriculum and pass a written competency exam before ending their probationary period.

Probationary surveyors must co-conduct 6 surveys with an experienced lead surveyor (minimum 5 years experience) who evaluates their competency before they can work independently.

All surveyors must complete at least 20 hours of in-service training annually, covering statutory/regulatory changes, practical applications, and policies affecting nursing home operations and resident care.

Existing Department of Public Health surveyors employed as of January 1, 2013 must complete retraining using the new employee curriculum between January 1, 2013 and January 1, 2014.

Supervisors and reviewers of surveyors must meet the same training requirements as surveyors themselves.
