HB5508 Summary

• Beginning July 1, 2012, reduces state stipends for county officials (supervisors of assessments, treasurers, coroners, recorders, auditors, and sheriffs) based on county population: full stipend for counties under 150,000 residents, 50% stipend for counties with 150,000-399,999 residents, and no stipend for counties with 400,000 or more residents.

• Eliminates state stipends entirely for Cook County sheriff and recorder of deeds beginning July 1, 2012.

• Reduces state stipends for Clerks of the Circuit Court using the same population-based formula: full stipend for counties under 150,000, 50% for counties 150,000-399,999, and no stipend for counties 400,000 or more, effective July 1, 2012.

• Amends the State Mandates Act to exempt this Act from reimbursement requirements, meaning counties must implement these changes without state reimbursement.

• Takes effect immediately upon becoming law.
