HB6232 Summary

• Beginning January 1, 2016, the Secretary of State must ask applicants for identification cards or driver's licenses whether they hold a Firearm Owner's Identification Card (FOID) and issue cards with a "FOID" designation if eligible.

• Identification cards and driver's licenses with FOID designation must display the applicant's FOID card number and expiration date, and the Secretary must notify the Department of State Police when issuing such cards.

• If the Department of State Police notifies the Secretary that a FOID card holder is no longer eligible to hold a FOID, the Secretary must confiscate the identification card or driver's license with the FOID designation and reissue it without the designation.

• FOID card holders who have been issued identification cards or driver's licenses with FOID designation may present these documents instead of the Firearm Owner's Identification Card whenever FOID display is required by law.

• The bill also amends provisions regarding military veteran designations on identification cards and driver's licenses, effective July 1, 2015.
