US Highway 50 runs 165.79 miles east to west across southern Illinois between Interstate 70 and Interstate 64, mostly as a 2-lane highway except for interchanges and a small section near the Indiana border

Illinois Department of Transportation completed a feasibility study in 2008 declaring the Route 50 expansion to a 4-lane highway feasible, with $5 million secured in 2009 Capital Bill funding and a $3.6 million Phase I Environmental Energy Study Contract signed in July 2011

The Illinois Route 50 Coalition, established in 2006, supports the expansion as an economic development strategy for rural communities in Lawrence, Richland, Clay, Marion, Clinton and St. Clair Counties that have experienced population loss

House of Representatives encourages state and federal officials to provide funding for the Route 50 Four-Lane Expansion Project between the Indiana state line and Interstate 64 as soon as funding becomes available
