Sister Ellen Marie Ryan served as a music teacher at Mother McAuley High School for 28 years, teaching general music, chorus, a cappella, and strings to thousands of students.

Under her leadership, the Mother McAuley music department expanded from one full-time teacher to four, with two of her former students becoming current teachers.

Sister Ellen Ryan continues to volunteer at Mother McAuley, coordinates the alumnae chorus, plans liturgies for the Sisters of Mercy, sings in the choir at St. Barnabas Church, and teaches piano lessons at Mercy Housing at Wentworth Commons.

A June 14, 2012 musical tribute event titled "Music & Memories with Sr. Ellen" raised more than $10,000 to endow a scholarship in her name, with over 200 attendees and 170 Facebook group members.

The Illinois House of Representatives honors Sister Ellen Ryan for her accomplishments and service as a model of hard work, integrity, and dedication.
