Notes Shields' distinction as the only person to serve as U.S. Senator from three different states: Illinois, Minnesota, and Missouri.

References Shields' duel with Abraham Lincoln over defaming newspaper articles, which ended with both men becoming friends, and his Civil War victory against "Stonewall" Jackson at the Battle of Kernstown.
