Chicago Fire Department Captain Herbert "Herbie" Johnson died on November 2, 2012, while rescuing families from a burning home in the Gage Park neighborhood.

Capt. Johnson served over 30 years with the Chicago Fire Department and received the Firefighting Medal of Honor in 2007 for rescuing children from a building.

He volunteered at Ground Zero in 2001 to aid in rescue efforts following the 9/11 terrorist attacks.

Beyond firefighting duties, Capt. Johnson supported a burn victims camp, cooked for charity events, and drove fire engines in Chicago Fire Department parades.

The Illinois House of Representatives mourns his passing and expresses sympathy to his family, including his wife Susan and three children.
