John P. Shonkwiler of Monticello passed away on July 18, 2012, at age 79 after a distinguished career in law and public service.

Served 23 years in the U.S. Navy, retiring as a captain in Naval intelligence in 1978, and earned a juris doctor from Northwestern University School of Law-Chicago in 1962.

Served as a judge for 47 years, including 18.5 years as chief judge of the Sixth Judicial Circuit, and held multiple leadership positions in judicial associations and committees.

Held various professional roles including delegate to the National Conference of Special Court Judges, president of the Illinois Judges Association, and received commendation for contributions to child support enforcement.

Illinois House of Representatives expresses condolences to his surviving sister Mary Alice Strodel, five nieces, one nephew, and directs a suitable copy of the resolution be presented to his family.
