Beginning with the 2013 registration year, municipally-owned vehicles operated by police departments are exempt from fees for transferring registration plates between vehicles.

Municipal police departments must report all registration plate transfers to the Secretary of State.

The Secretary of State shall adopt rules to implement the transfer exemption for municipal police vehicles.

Permanent vehicle registration plates continue to be issued at no charge to state-owned vehicles and at a one-time fee of $8.00 to county, township, and municipal vehicles.

County sheriff vehicles have had similar transfer fee exemptions since the 2012 registration year, with sheriffs required to report transfers to the Secretary of State.
