IL SB3281

Amends the Illinois Insurance Code Section 367f regarding firemen's group health insurance continuation privileges during retirement or disability periods.

Allows disabled or retired firefighters not previously enrolled in municipal group insurance plans to elect coverage during open enrollment periods, but only once and before becoming eligible for federal Medicare coverage.

Requires firefighters electing continued coverage to be insurable and pay the full cost of insurance premiums at the same rate as active firefighters, with no distinction in premium rates or benefits between continued and active coverage.

Municipalities may not be required to pay any insurance premiums beyond those negotiated in collective bargaining agreements, and benefits continue as supplemental coverage once firefighters become Medicare-eligible.

Takes effect immediately upon becoming law.
