Veterans with service-connected disabilities verified by a licensed physician, physician assistant, or advanced practice nurse may apply for disabled veterans license plates displaying the international symbol of access for one motor vehicle without paying registration fees.

Veterans with 50% or more service-connected disability who do not qualify for disability plates under the above provision may apply for special registration plates without the international symbol of access for one motor vehicle without paying registration fees.

Disabled veterans license plates may be issued as vanity or personalized plates at the Secretary of State's discretion and registration may be issued for multi-year periods with staggered renewal options.

Renewal of disabled veterans plates requires documentation of continued eligibility unless the applicant has a permanent qualifying disability; the Illinois Department of Veterans' Affairs may assist in providing disability documentation.

Motor vehicles bearing disabled veterans plates issued under subsection (a) of Section 3-609 receive the same parking privileges as those for persons with disabilities, including exemption from parking meter fees and time limitations on municipal parking areas.
