U.S. Department of Energy plans to issue a Funding Opportunity Announcement for an Energy Storage Hub with $20 million per year in funding for 5 years, with initial Congressional appropriation of $20 million in FY 2012.

Energy Storage Hub will conduct research on green, cost-effective energy storage methods for renewable resources and smart grid applications.

Illinois universities including Northwestern University, University of Chicago, and University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, along with Argonne National Laboratory, have already developed conceptual groundwork for the Hub's operation.

Illinois General Assembly pledges support for Argonne National Laboratory's bid to host the Energy Storage Hub and will provide necessary support for its location at Argonne.

Illinois General Assembly urges the U.S. Department of Energy to select Illinois and Argonne as the Hub location based on existing expertise, experience, and potential for innovation and job creation.
