Frank C. Rathje Jr. passed away on May 10, 2012, and the Illinois Senate expresses mourning for his death.

Served more than 35 years in Chicago banking, including as vice-president of Continental Illinois National Bank and Trust Co. (appointed 1964) and president of Elmhurst National Bank and Illinois Valley Bancshares (sold in 1992).

Served on Elmhurst College's Board of Trustees from 1982 to 1989 as trustee emeritus and was instrumental in creating Glenwood School for Boys and Girls' 420-acre west campus in St. Charles in 1993; Rathje Hall at Grinnell College was named in his honor in 2006.

Military service as a radio man on a transport ship during World War II; graduated from Grinnell College in Iowa in 1950.

Survived by daughter Karen Rathje Shaw, sister Shirley Reed, 2 grandchildren, and 1 great-grandson; preceded in death by wife Marion.
