Sandra J. Mills passed away on November 27, 2012, after a long battle with cancer.

Mills earned a bachelor's degree in sociology from Bradley University, a master's of social work from the University of Illinois-Urbana Champaign, and a doctorate in adult education from Northern Illinois University.

Served as lobbyist for the National Association of Social Workers-Illinois Chapter from 1991 for 17 years, advocating for human services and the social work profession.

Joined the faculty of the University of Illinois-Springfield in 1994 as a professor in the Child Family and Community Services Program and Social Work Program, achieving tenure in 2001 and serving as department chair in 2003 and 2004.

Illinois Senate expresses condolences to her surviving family: husband Joseph Mills, son Aaron Mills, daughter Lisa Stewart, sister Joy Henderson, and sister-in-law Betty Phalen.
