• Post-secondary schools are prohibited from requesting or requiring students or their parents to provide passwords or account information to access social networking website profiles.

• Post-secondary schools may enforce policies on use of school electronic equipment and monitor school email and equipment usage without accessing student social media accounts.

• Post-secondary schools may obtain publicly available information about students or access social media accounts with reasonable cause to believe a student violated school disciplinary rules or policies.

• Elementary and secondary schools must notify students and parents in their disciplinary rules or handbook that they may request passwords if they have reasonable cause to believe a student violated school disciplinary policies.

• Violations by post-secondary schools or their agents constitute a petty offense.
