County boards must establish programs in consultation with sheriffs allowing individuals to turn in unwanted firearms by calling the sheriff's office to schedule a surrender at the sheriff's office.

Municipalities operating police departments must establish programs allowing individuals to turn in unwanted firearms by calling the police department to schedule a surrender at a police station.

Local public entities and public employees acting within employment scope are immune from liability for actions related to these firearm surrender programs, except in cases of willful or wanton conduct.

The State is not required to reimburse counties and municipalities for implementing these firearm surrender programs.
