HB1343 Summary

• Amends the Safe Pharmaceutical Disposal Act to authorize retail pharmacies licensed under the Pharmacy Practice Act to display containers for disposal of used, expired, or unwanted pharmaceuticals at their premises.

• Requires pharmacy disposal containers to meet the same security, accessibility, and signage requirements as containers located at city halls or police departments, including locked and secured contents with clearly legible signage.

• Prohibits pharmacies from dispensing prescription drugs in exchange for or in return for pharmaceuticals deposited in the container; prescription drugs may only be dispensed pursuant to a valid prescription.

• Amends the Pharmacy Practice Act to explicitly authorize retail pharmacies to display pharmaceutical disposal containers under the Safe Pharmaceutical Disposal Act without violating pharmacy regulations.

• Effective January 1, 2014.
