IL HB1347

Amends the Department of Juvenile Justice Mortality Review Team Act to add evaluation of life sentences without parole opportunity as a factor in reviewing youth deaths in Department custody.

Requires mortality review teams to evaluate the role that life sentences without opportunity for parole have in youth deaths occurring within Department facilities.

Maintains existing requirements that teams review all youth deaths, determine causes, evaluate prevention methods, and recommend staff training and policy changes.

Specifies review timelines of 90 days after law enforcement investigation completion, or 90 days after obtaining necessary information from medical examiners if no investigation occurs, with possible 90-day extensions.
