Secretary of State must waive skills tests for driver applicants with military commercial motor vehicle experience, subject to federal requirements under 49 C.F.R. 383.77.

All commercial driver license and instruction permit applicants must certify which type of driving operations they will engage in: non-excepted interstate, non-excepted intrastate, excepted interstate, or excepted intrastate.

Existing CDL and instruction permit holders as of January 30, 2012 must certify their applicable driving operations category by January 30, 2014.

CDL with school bus endorsement requires fingerprint background checks, written safety test, medical examination with drug screening, and no conviction of specified felonies or drug offenses.

No person can be issued a CDL unless domiciled in Illinois and meeting federal medical fitness requirements, including hearing capability (may use hearing aid).
