HB4500 Summary

• Allows veterans with service-connected disabilities rated 50% or more by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs to obtain free disabled veterans license plates without registration fees, effective immediately.

• Beginning with the 2014 license year, veterans with 50% or higher service-connected disability ratings become eligible for free fishing licenses, with renewal requirements only for non-permanent disabilities.

• Beginning with the 2014 license year, veterans with 50% or higher service-connected disability ratings become eligible for free hunting licenses, with renewal requirements only for non-permanent disabilities.

• Permits psychiatrists (in addition to physicians, physician assistants, and advanced practice nurses) to certify that a veteran's service-connected disability qualifies them for disability registration plates displaying the international symbol of access.

• The Illinois Department of Veterans' Affairs may assist in providing documentation of disability for veterans seeking these benefits.
