HB6000 Summary: Eric's Law

• Adds State's Attorneys and Assistant State's Attorneys to the list of protected public officials under aggravated battery statutes, making battery against them a Class 1 felony when causing great bodily harm or permanent disability or disfigurement.

• Creates new Class 3 felony offense for battery against State's Attorneys or Assistant State's Attorneys when committed while they perform official duties, to prevent performance of duties, or in retaliation for performing duties.

• Establishes new Class X felony (12 to 45 years imprisonment) for aggravated battery causing severe and permanent disability that renders the victim incapable of independently performing basic life-sustaining functions.

• Modifies air rifle references to cite Section 24.8-0.1 of the Criminal Code instead of the Air Rifle Act.
