Illinois Department of Corrections is directed to select a sample of facilities for survey, audit, and accreditation by the National Commission on Correctional Health Care (NCCHC) over the next 3 years.

Eight correctional centers are specifically designated for accreditation: Robinson, Southwestern, Graham, Pinckneyville, Illinois River, Logan, Dixon, and Stateville Correctional Centers.

NCCHC accreditation process must include onsite visits, staff and inmate interviews, and extensive review of policies, practices, and documentation against 2008 Standards for Health Services.

Examination areas include governance and administration, safety, personnel and training, health care services and support, inmate care and treatment, health promotion, special needs and services, health records, and medical-legal issues.

Department must report findings, recommendations, and results to the Illinois General Assembly upon completion and implement any policy or practice changes statewide across all facilities.
