Illinois House of Representatives memorializes the death of former State Representative Michael K. Smith, who passed away on August 9, 2014.

Rep. Smith served 16 years in the Illinois House representing Fulton, Peoria, and Tazewell counties after being elected in 1994.

Served as Chairman of the House Elementary and Secondary Education Committee and advocated for increased school funding, literacy programs, early childhood education, and special needs students.

Worked to bring jobs to Central Illinois through support for employers including Keystone Steel and Wire Co. and Cook Medical, and helped establish the Heart of Illinois Regional Port District and Western Illinois Economic Development Authority.

Served on multiple House committees including Appropriations, Agriculture and Conservation, Environment and Energy, and Personnel and Pensions, and founded the Illinois Legislative Fire Services Caucus.
